Week 4
1 - 3 SEPTEMBER 2023
Michael’s
WEEKLY
MATCHDAY
Preview

Hi Everyone,

With only three rounds of matches gone, it’s already looking like this season could be a classic with more teams pushing for Champions League spots than ever before.

So, let’s have a look at the Matchday 4 fixtures.

Friday, 1 September

First up on Friday night is Luton Town versus West Ham United. This clash between second top and second bottom in the table could be an entertaining game. Luton have only played two games so far and they ended in defeats against Brighton and Chelsea. However, I don’t think Rob Edwards will be too disappointed with the way his team has played so far, especially given that they are still getting accustomed to life in the Premier League.

West Ham have started their season well with back-to-back 3-1 wins against Chelsea and Brighton. They really do look much more potent up front this seasonand I fancy them to come away from Kenilworth Road with a 2-0 win.

Saturday, 2 September

In the early kick off on Saturday we have a bottom of the table clash between Sheffield United and Everton. Neither team has been able to register a point as yet and even at this early stage of the season, it feels like a must win game for both teams if they are to have any hopes of avoiding a relegation battle later in the season. It’s fair to say I’m not expecting a game for the purists here, but I do fancy Everton to squeak home with a 1-0 away win.

In the 4pm kick offs on Saturday I expect Manchester City to maintain their 100% record with a straightforward 3-1 win against Fulham although I did say that last week against Sheffield United and they only just fell over the line in that one!

Also, at 4pm Chelsea face Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge. Nottingham Forest were handed a very difficult early season fixture list with them having to take on Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City all within their first six games!

Chelsea on the other hand will be feeling good about themselves after their 3-0 win over Luton Town last time out. The Chelsea players now seem to be settling in and I really do fancy them to get the job done here with a comfortable 3-1 win.

In the two remaining 4pm kick offs I’m going with Tottenham to beat Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor and Brentford to secure a 2-0 win at home against Bournemouth.

In the evening kick off on Saturday, we have two teams in Brighton andNewcastle United, who will be looking to get back to winning ways after their disappointing results on Matchday 3.

Brighton were surprisingly humbled by West Ham in a 3-1 defeat and the Seagulls manager, Roberto de Zerbi must quickly find a Plan B before all teams start to play the way West Ham did i.e. sit back and defend for your lives before breaking on the counter-attack.

Newcastle United will be hurting after their capitulation against Liverpool on Sunday. They played so well for such a long period of the game and were looking comfortable with their 1-0 lead, until that late, late, two goal burst from Darwin Nunez saw Liverpool leave St JamesPark with all three points.

I see this one being a closely fought battle and therefore, a difficult one to predict. However, rather than sit on the fence,I’m going with a 2-1 away win for Eddie Howe and his men.

Sunday, 3 September

On Sunday we have two matches at 3pm and in the first one, I’m going with Crystal Palace to secure all three points with a 2-1 home win against Wolves and I’m also going for Liverpool to beat Aston Villa 3-2 at Anfield. Villa have bounced back well since their opening match debacle where they lost 5-1 against Newcastle United and they are very much looking like aside who will finish high up the table.

Liverpool will still be buzzing after their smash and grab performance on Sunday and with the Anfield faithful roaring them on I can see Liverpool winning this one in a high-scoring contest.

The final game of Matchday 4 takes place on Sunday at 5:30pm and is arguably the biggest game of the weekend.

Arsenal take on Manchester United in a game I’m really looking forward to. This fixture may not have same intensity as when both teams were fighting it out for titles, year in, year out, but nonetheless I expect it to be a tasty encounter with no quarter given by either side.

Manchester United have flattered to deceive so far this season and from what I’ve seen, they are still some way off being title contenders. Arsenal on the other hand have bought well in the Summer and I still fancy them to be close to the very top of the table at the end of the season. They will have been disappointed to have dropped two points against Fulham last time out and I fully expect them to get back to winning ways with a 3-1 home win.
