Week 2
18 - 21 AUGUST 2023
Michael’s
WEEKLY
MATCHDAY
Preview

I managed to get the season off to a decent start with a few spot-on predictions last week.

That said, there were also one or two results that I didn’t see coming! So, let’s focus on the Premier League Matchday 2 fixtures.

Friday, 18 August

We start on Friday night with one of the newly promoted teams when Nottingham Forest entertain Sheffield United at the City Ground.

Forest acquitted themselves well in their defeat against Arsenal on the opening weekend and I expect them to build on that here. They have a very tough opening run of fixtures so will be looking at this game to record their first three points of the season.

Sheffield United on the other hand, showed why they are one of the favourites for relegation. They were very disappointing in their home defeat to Crystal Palace and I’m going for a straightforward 2-0 win to Forest in this one.

Saturday, 19 August

On Saturday, Liverpool take on Bournemouth at Anfield and although Liverpool’s draw with Chelsea on Sunday provided further evidence that they would benefit from signing a holding midfielder, I do fancy them to get the job done in comfortable fashion. I am going for a 3-0 home win for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

In the other two 4 o’clock kick offs, I am going for Brighton to beat Wolves 1-0 at Molineux and Fulham and Brentford to play out a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage.

Also on Saturday, in the early evening kick off, we have a game I’m really looking forward to.

Tottenham Hotspur take on Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium and I can see goals galore in this one. Despite Spurs losing Harry Kane to Bayern Munich this week, we all know that Ange Postecoglou likes his teams to play attacking and entertaining football, so I still fancy them to score goals aplenty. Unfortunately, they also look likely to concede a lot as well which was amply demonstrated in their 2-2 draw with Brentford last time out!Manchester United were anything but convincing in their somewhat fortunate 1-0 win against Wolves on Monday night and they are another team that look as though they will concede plenty of goals at the moment.

All in all, I think this could be a great spectacle, particularly for the neutrals and I’m going for Spurs to edge it 3-2.

The late game on Saturday sees arguably the biggest game of the weekend when Manchester City take on Newcastle United at the Etihad stadium. Newcastle made a blistering start to the season with their 5-1 demolition of Aston Villa on Matchday 1 and they really do look the real deal. However, they are taking on the best team in the world right now in Manchester City and whilst I expect it to be a close encounter, I think home advantage could be a factor here. I’m going for a narrow 2-1 win to the Citizens.

Sunday, 20 August

Aston Villa versus Everton in the early kick off on Sunday provides an intriguing contest as both teams failed to register a point on the opening weekend and will be anxious to get their seasons up and running.

Villa conceded five goals against a rampant Newcastle United in what was a closer game than the scoreline suggests. Indeed, Everton’s 1-0 loss to Fulham was also deceptive because Everton had enough clear-cut chances to have won the game comfortably.

The obvious concern for Everton is their lack of an out and out goal scorer who can regularly convert the chances that are being created and unless they can address that in what remains of the transfer window, I fear this could be another sticky season for the Toffees.

Before a ball had been kicked this season, I predicted Villa to finish in sixth spot and I’m certainly not changing that after one game! I’m going for Villa to get their first points on the board with a 3-1 home win.

The other game on Sunday sees West Ham take on Chelsea at the London Stadium.

West Ham were denied a perfect start to the season by a Dominic Solanke late equaliser in their opening game at Bournemouth. It’s hard to tell exactly how the Hammer’s season will pan out but for sure they have a tough assignment this weekend.

I really liked the way Chelsea looked against Liverpool on Sunday and was particularly impressed with Enzo Fernandez. Despite costing £107 million he looks to be a great signing who can play in a number of positions and when Moises Caicedo comes into the side, I reckon Chelsea may well have the best midfield pairing in the Premier League!

Another plus for this new look Chelsea side is that they don’t have any European football to worry about this season and the last time that happened (season 2016/2017) they went on to win the Premier League title! I’m not suggesting that will happen this time around, but I do fancy Chelsea to have an excellent season domestically and I can see them putting West Ham to the sword on Matchday 2 with a 1-0 away win.

Monday, 21 August

The final game of Matchday 2 sees Crystal Palace host Arsenal at Selhurst Park.

Both teams will have been happy to start their season with wins on Matchday 1 and both managers will be keen for their teams to build on that.

Whilst an away trip to Selhurst Park is never an easy assignment I do fancy Arsenal to get the job done on Monday night with a 2-0 win.
